Childhood obesity is a very hot topic and the USA and UK governments seem determined to deal with the issue. The best place however to tackle overweight children is at home. The importance of a healthy diet for your children cannot be overstated. Educating your children in food nutrition and providing understanding of the importance of a healthy diet balanced with exercise is as important as the other teachings parents provide. Dealing with obese children is not an easy matter. Low fat diets and low calorie foods tend to be devoid of all their favourite things. Then there’s peer pressure. Not being able to go to the fast food place with friends or not being able to indulge in the popcorn and nachos at the cinema is no fun for any child. The key is imagination with food and getting your children to like what they are eating after you have cut out the fat and the excessive calories. If you feed your children correctly, fast food and cinema popcorn become reasonable treats.
One reason for overweight or obese children is the lack of exercise. Many children today find it too easy to just sit at their game consoles or computers and while away their free time playing games on them. It means they are just not getting enough healthy exercise, which in turn means they are not burning off the calories they are eating. Not only this but the lack of exercise also may mean that their muscles are just not getting the work they need to keep your children as fit and healthy as they should be for kids of their age.
It is a hard task for any parent to convince children these days that they should be outside playing with their friends especially when there is a new computer game which has just appeared on the scene.
One idea which may work, if the chance of success in getting your children off their console games is just too great for them to accept, is to get a game which actively promotes a workout routine. Everyone loves to watch television programs about becoming the next best dancer in the country, so why not get a game which gets them up and dancing. There are plenty of these games on the market which include ones for Nintendo. The Dance Stage Hottest Party is one of them which everyone who has bought it really loves to mess around to.
Another idea is a fitness game. Many of these are great because kids often don't realize the amount of energy they are using up each time they play them. There are some really interesting and fun ones to choose from such as Hike and Hunt or Frantic Flying Disk as well as Jumping Jack Flash.
Of course getting children off their computers and game consoles is only one part of the problem. The next is to tackle their diets. This is just as hard as the first task you set yourself because children just love every type of junk food that is on the market.
The trick is to do change their diets slowly by introducing new healthier things for them to eat gradually. If there is something they particularly hate, don’t insist on them eating it and don’t serve it up to them again, instead find another healthy alternative that will get them eating their food without a murmur of protest from them.
We are very fortunate today because there are a lot of low fat, low sugar and low salt foods on the market which really do make a healthy alternative to a lot of the junk food that is around. Sweet corn whether on the cob or loose, is a great way of getting kids to eat some sort of vegetable with their meals and most kids love it.
The things is you want your children to work with you when you are planning a meal for them, get them involved and if you can, get them to grow some vegetables in your garden for you. Kids love to watch things growing so if you are lucky they may just want to taste what they have managed to grow themselves too.
