Peaches are a round juicy fruit with yellow to red skin and a downy outer texture. The flesh can be yellow or white and each peach contains a large stone. They grow on large trees or up to five metres and are hand picked.
Peaches originated in China and can be seen in pictures from as early as 10th Century B.C. The Chinese developed many different kinds of peaches before peaches spread to Persia and were found by Alexander the Great, who took them to Greece. Because of this, peaches are called "Prunus persica", which incorrectly implies that peaches originated in Persia. It is thought that peaches first came to Europe in the 1st Century A.D, though they did not appear in England until the 17th Century. Peaches are now grown in 64 countries around the world.
Peaches can be consumed fresh or made into a variety of desserts or preserved by stewing them or making jam or chutney. Peach juice is also available and peaches can be found stewed and tinned. When buying fresh peaches, look for firm peaches with a cream or gold undercolour as opposed to a white or green undercolour. Peaches ripen on the tree and green fruit will not usually ripen after being picked. Ripe fruit will also have a good fragrance. Keep fresh peaches for up to three days, taking care not to bruise them.
