Citrus Chillers

All citrus fruits are packed full of vitamin C but whilst we enjoy orange juice and grapefruit juice as drinks we only use lemon and lime juices in cooking or in small amounts. Here are some healthy low fat ways of taking advantages of lemon and lime juice. There’s no orange in these, see the separate page of orange based drinks.

A kitchen designed for healthy eating should contain a blender/smoothie maker and an electric juicer if you can afford it.

  • All of these recipes are for 1 serving and all have less than150 calories per serving.
Requirements
  • Blender, smoothie maker or food processor
  • Juicer
Ingredients
    Fennel Fancy:
  • 1 small fennel bulb
  • 1 lemon
  • 100ml chilled chamomile tea
  • Ginger Zinger:
  • 1 carrot
  • ½ Galia or Honeydew Melon
  • 1 lime
  • 2.5cm cube fresh root ginger
  • 3-4 cardamom pods (optional)
  • Killa Chilla:
  • 1 grapefruit
  • 375g cucumber
  • 1 lemon
  • Sparkling mineral water
Directions
Fennel Fancy:
Juice the fennel and lemon
Add to the chamomile tea and mix
Serve over ice and garnish with lemon slices

Ginger Zinger:
Peel the ginger
Remove the flesh from the melon
Juice the carrot, melon flesh, lime and ginger
Mix all the juices together
Serve in a glass over ice.
Decorate with lime wedges and cardamom pods (optional)

Killa Chilla:
Juice the grapefruit, cucumber and lemon
Mix until well combined
Pour into a very tall glass over ice
Top up with sparkling mineral water
Decorate with slices of lemon and cucumber (mint makes a nice addition if you have some)
